With the working title of podcast czar, Ruth DeFoster is the main force behind Media and Culture, a podcast created by the Cultural and Critical Studies Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) to highlight timely scholarship in the field of Cultural Studies. This podcast features the work of division members who study, teach, and write about mass media and culture through a critical, multicultural lens.

Ruth manages content creation, production, and promotion of the series, as well as planning, recording, editing, hosting, and engaging with the podcast audience.

We discuss gun laws and violence in Chicago, the role of mental illness and video games in mass shootings, as well as, the predictable patterns that nearly all mass shooters exhibit. This is just one of the points you'll hear during my conversation with terrorism scholar and mass shooting expert, Dr. Ruth Defoster. We discuss the consistent features present in all mass shootings and their perpetrators, including toxic masculinity. We walk through several of the country's attacks and discuss the media's treatment of these incidents, the contagion effect of mass shootings, and the media's influence on the culture of gun violence in America. Lastly, we discuss the Trump administration's treatment of and response to terror.
